The Pokémon GO update is now starting to be rolled out on Android and iOS devices. This update adds compatibility for the new Johto Pokémon, adds genders to the Pokémon you encounter including gender differences for Pokémon that have them in the main game, includes new kinds of berries, new items, new customisation options, new UI alterations allowing for the new features and various new character customisation options. At present, Johto Pokémon are not activated. In addition to this, from later this afternoon until February 28th, Pokémon Storage upgrades will require less Poké Coins to purchase. Screenshots from the Japanese press pack have also showed the process of evolving with items. The item will be included in the cost of evolution. For example, Scyther requires 40 Scyther Candy and 1 Metal Coat to evolve.
